Code Ownership
Code ownership means the client owns the source code, repository, and infrastructure outright — the agency holds no license, lock-in, or proprietary layer.
Definition
On day one, the repository lives in the client's GitHub organisation, the hosting account is in the client's name, and every dependency is open source or directly licensed to the client. There is no agency-owned framework, plugin, or middleware that the client would need to keep paying for after the engagement ends.
Why it matters for your business
If you cannot fire your agency without rebuilding from scratch, you do not own the asset. Code ownership is the difference between a vendor relationship and a hostage situation. It also matters for due diligence: investors and acquirers will ask.
